Who wrote this changes how you should read it, so it goes first. South Dakota Registered Agent.co runs this ranking and sits at the top of it. Follow the recommendation and we get paid. Discount the self-praise to taste. The prices carry no such asterisk. They came off each vendor's own site in July 2026, and one of them beats ours.

Why We Put Ourselves First

Four things, each one checkable.

Same-day scans. Process served at our South Dakota address reaches your portal before the day ends, with an email saying it landed.

$99, then $99 again. No opening rate was ever offered, so nothing has to expire. The renewal invoice matches the first invoice.

One product. Checkout holds the agent service. That is the entire cart.

Our street, not yours. The public record carries our address; your house stays out of it.

One extra fee exists and this is where you should learn it, not later: $15 an item to scan ordinary business mail, meaning anything that is not legal process. Nothing else.

We are not going to tell you nobody is cheaper. Strictly by sticker, the cheapest registered agent service in South Dakota belongs to BetterLegal at $90, which undercuts us by nine dollars. The honest version of our claim is smaller: $99 stands among the lowest flat annual prices anybody here publishes, same-day scanning comes with it instead of being sold separately, and the figure never climbs.

2. Northwest Registered Agent

The runner-up, and not by much. Northwest posts real prices, answers calls with staff, and treated client address privacy as ordinary practice years before this industry decided privacy was marketable. Two catches. The free year rides along with formation work, so buying agent service by itself puts you at $125 annually. And the $100 rate needs five or more state registrations, which a South Dakota-only business is never going to have. So $125 is the number that follows you, running $26 a year above ours.

3. BetterLegal

$90 a year, quoted in their own copy and confirmed during our July 2026 sweep. Lowest published renewal on the page. The blank spot is the opening year, which nothing we could find bothers to state. That is why a documented $99 outranks an undocumented $90 on a list about published prices. Get to their checkout, like the first-year terms, and $90 coverage is a fair deal.

4. Rocket Lawyer

$125 a year, the same at every membership level, with no expiring introductory rate anywhere in it. Rare discipline, and credit is due. The catch is not the price, it is the shape of the product. Rocket Lawyer sells a legal subscription and hangs agent service off the side of it. Worth the money if you will use the templates and the attorney time. Wasteful if all you need is a South Dakota address and a fast scan.

5. ZenBusiness

Two numbers, and only the second one counts. Year one runs $99 plus state fees for standalone agent service. Every year after that is $199. You will renew far more often than you sign up, so plan around $199. The platform is polished and we will not argue otherwise. Polish costs an extra hundred a year against a flat $99, repeated for as long as you stay.

6. Bizee (formerly Incfile)

Incfile, renamed. Form through them and agent service arrives free for three to twelve months, depending on the package bought. That is real value if Bizee was filing your paperwork anyway. Then it lapses to $149 a year, and nothing sends up a flare on the day a free thing quits being free. Put the expiry date on a calendar while you are still signing up.

7. LegalZoom

$249 a year, auto-renewing, with no first-year discount our July 2026 check could find. Highest flat rate here. What the money buys is the most familiar brand in the category. What it does not buy is easier treatment from South Dakota, which asks the same of a $249 agent and a $90 one: a real street address in state, somebody present during business hours, papers forwarded without delay. You are paying for the name and nothing beyond it.

8. Swyft Filings

Read the billing unit before the number. That $149 repeats quarterly, not annually, so the yearly cost sits near $596. Highest effective price on this page by a wide margin, with no introductory discount we could locate. Four charges of $149 feel smaller than one charge of $596. They are not. One year of Swyft runs about what six years of ours does.

9. Inc Authority

Free first year. Undisclosed second year. In July 2026 we went through their FAQ, their package listings, and their front page, and no renewal figure is printed in any of it, which usually means the number appears at checkout or comes out of a phone call. Rank services by what they publish and the one publishing nothing lands last. The silence is the review.

The Address Is the Real Requirement

SDCL ch. 59-11 is South Dakota's Model Registered Agents Act, and it accepts three appointments. A commercial agent, listed with the state under 59-11-7 and carrying a CRA number, which is us. A noncommercial agent, meaning any other individual or entity with a South Dakota address. Or an office title inside your own company under 59-11-6(2)(b), where the filing names a position rather than a person and service goes to whoever holds that position when papers show up. Your LLC still cannot enter its own name on that line; designating one of its own posts is as close as the statute lets you get. Appointment mechanics sit at 59-11-6, definitions at 59-11-2, and 47-34A-203(a)(3) makes the agent a mandatory line in the Articles of Organization.

All three routes hit the same wall. The address must be an actual street address or a rural route box inside South Dakota, and a PO box on its own is rejected. Someone has to be there during business hours. Starting from scratch? Articles of Organization run $150 online, $165 on paper, and $200 if you authorize series. The state's LLC forms are named and never numbered, so ignore any guide that hands you a South Dakota form number.

Plenty of South Dakota Owners Live Somewhere Else

South Dakota collects no state income tax and keeps entity records fairly spare, which is why a large share of the LLCs on file here belong to people who have never visited. If that is you, the agent is not an accessory. It is the only footprint your company has in the state, the single address a process server, a bank, or the Secretary of State can actually use. Weigh reliability and forwarding speed at least as heavily as the yearly figure.

Switching Costs $10 Online, $25 on Paper

Any agent listed here, us included, gets replaced by one filing: a Statement of Change, covering registered office, registered agent, or both at the same time. No form number exists, because South Dakota names its forms rather than numbering them. Online it is $10, the statutory fee under SDCL 59-11-3(3). Paper runs $25, since mailed filings carry a $15 surcharge, which is also why the printed PDF shows $25 on its face. The agent you are leaving gets no vote and signs nothing. Coming to us? We prepare the filing during signup. Details on the change of agent page.

Anniversary Month, Then a $50 Late Fee

The yearly obligation is the annual report, and its deadline is your entity's anniversary month. The form opens on the first day of that month and closes on the last. No grace period follows, so the first of the next month makes you delinquent. The fee is $55 through the state e-filing portal and $70 by mail, that $15 paper surcharge showing up again. Delinquent reports add $50. Stay delinquent roughly two months and the Secretary of State administratively dissolves the entity under SDCL 47-34A-809; the report itself lives at SDCL 47-34A-211.

Anniversary-month deadlines are private to your entity. No shared calendar date will remind you, and no accountant's spring rush is going to catch it for you. We watch your month and warn you before it shuts. Filing stays your job; the annual report walkthrough has the steps.

Picking One

All nine can legally hold the appointment. What separates them is price, forwarding speed, and whether the renewal figure is printed where a buyer can find it. $249 buys the famous name. $90 is the lowest sticker with an unexplained opening year. One bills quarterly. One will not say at all. We charge $99 a year, hold that price, scan what shows up on the day it shows up, and put our South Dakota street on your filing in place of your own. If that reads right to you, ordering takes about two minutes.
